Changes to NHS Dentistry from November 2023

As valued patients of Comfort Dental, we wanted to take the time to explain the changes the Scottish Government has enacted for NHS dentistry in Scotland.
The Scottish Government has undertaken a full review of the provision of NHS dentistry in Scotland and has made significant changes.
These changes took effect from the 1st November 2023. The amendments and variations being made to the existing regulations are to better reflect the present realities of NHS dentistry in Scotland.

The following changes included:
  •  A change in the number of treatments available
  • How often those treatments can be provided to patients
  • An increase in costs if you currently pay for treatment (these fees are set by the Scottish Government and are out-with our control).
  • The frequency you will be able to attend for an NHS dental examination. This will be based on your individual clinical need. For most patients this will mean a change from 6 monthly NHS examinations, to between 12-24 months. Your dentist will inform you how this change may affect you personally when you attend for your next examination appointment.
  • Denture repairs will now incur a charge of £50.88 for NHS fee paying patients.
  • All emergency appointments will have an associated fee for NHS fee paying patients.
As such, all treatment after 1st November 2023 will be under the new Terms of Service.
This information is available on the NHS inform website where full details of the scale of fees is provided.

As we continue to return to routine dentistry and continue working our way through  our extensive backlogs, please bear with us as waiting times for appointments will be longer than you are used to.   However any emergencies  including severe pain, swelling and trauma will continue to be a priority, thus to arrange an emergency appointment please contact us first thing any morning.

As a friendly reminder, please be kind to our staff at this time, we will not tolerate any abuse or aggression towards any member of our team.

We appreciate your patience and understanding at this time.

Any queries should be directed to Comfort Dental on the normal practice phone number during normal working hours.
